The release of Super Smash Bros. Sora’s Ultimate crashes the Nintendo eShop

After a long wait for Sora in Super Smash Bros. Ultimately, the wait ends up being longer than expected as some fans get error messages instead.

After three and a half years of Super Smash Bros Ultimate fulfilling gaming dreams with its incredible roster, the lineup of fighters is finally complete. Everyone is there, including Sora from Kingdom Hearts; the light at the end of the tunnel for the fans who have been waiting for it. Unfortunately, some of these players had to wait a bit longer as Sora’s traffic caused the Nintendo eShop to crash.

Sora was announced as the last fighter of Super Smash Bros Ultimate during the last Sakurai Presents. Many fans around the world were surprised and thrilled that the Keyblade wielder was finally the final fighter. The number of fans apparently ended up being way too big for Nintendo’s servers, as many error messages were given to players when trying to download the DLC.

Nintendo has performed maintenance on Smash Bros Ultimate and its network services in preparation for the launch of Sora, and after Smash Ultimate’s update went live, the servers quickly caved under the strain. Fans took to social media to express their inability to get Sora, while other fans just wanted to get the Doom Slayer Mii Fighter outfit and couldn’t. So many fans shared their experiences that “Nintendo eShop” started trending on a few platforms.

While the eShop was down, Network Services had to deal with fans managing to get the new fighter and not being able to keep up. Where half of the commenting fans were talking about their eShop issues, soon the other half was To break players saying they lost connection due to traffic. Soon after, network services maintenance was complete and now fans can access Sora without any issues.

While it’s unfortunate that some people couldn’t get the character they wanted due to technical issues, it’s a bit humorous to watch through fan reactions. At the very least, once everything is back to normal, Sora should be fairly easy to obtain. Seems like a fitting ending for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC, like personas 5 Joker also caused servers to crash when it launched.

However, with news of Nintendo’s eShop servers crashing due to this release, it makes you wonder what will happen with the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack. With such a high price and servers crashing even during Smash Bros. tournaments, there are bound to be improvements that Nintendo can make. However, whatever improvements Nintendo makes to its online services will most likely come later than sooner.

Super Smash Bros Ultimate is now available on Nintendo Switch.
