Three of the best Super Nintendo games are now available on 3DS

Nintendo delivered the goods to 3DS eShop users this week.

Three of the best games ever released for Super Nintendo – and really, any other console you can think of – are now available to download on your 3DS handheld. It doesn’t get much better than Super Metroid, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy Kong’s Quest.

Each game will cost you $7.99 and all of them are only compatible with the “new” 3DS model released in 2015. The same goes for all other SNES games available in the eShop.

In 1994, Super Metroid brought Samus Aran to Nintendo’s second home console, taking many ideas from the original NES game and improving on them. It has already been re-released on the Wii Virtual Console, but this is the first time it’s been available on a handheld device.

A link to the past is often hailed as the best game in the Zelda series, and inspired the 2013 hit 3DS game, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. A little like Super Metroid, Link to the past refined many ideas from the original game. It’s a rare game — also like metroid – which is still holding up after more than 20 years.

Diddy’s Kong Quest wasn’t as groundbreaking as the other two, largely because its predecessor (which is also available in the eShop) was also an SNES release. Both games have a very similar style, but “more of the same” isn’t great when you step out of the original donkey kong country.

The sequel trio joins a small handful of other SNES titles already available in the 3DS eShop, including DKC, Super Mario World, Super Mario Kart, F-zero, Earthbound and Pilot Wings.
